Question:  In the FIT rules, consideration is given to what would trigger the upgrading of the transmission system: what is being put in place to determine the necessary upgrades of the distribution system required to carry the power produced by microFIT projects in areas of minimal capacity?

Answer:  Micro-scale projects (10kW or less) and "Capacity Allocation Exempt" projects will be offered a contract without undergoing an assessment for transmission/distribution system availability. The assumption here is that these projects will have minimal impact on the grid. Obviously, in greater numbers there will be some impact of these projects on the grid. However, LDCs are responsible for on going monitoring and planning of their systems to allow more renewable projects to connect.

LDCs are now required to make plans that include grid expansions to accommodate renewable projects. These plans must be approved by the Ontario Energy Board.
