Question:  I have been told that there will be a monthly and/or annual fee for reading the meter which records the energy generated by a photovoltaic system in the FIR program. We are thinking in terms of a rooftop system which capacity less than 10 kW.

1) Is the statement above true or expected to be so? If so, what are the (likely) details?

2) Are there likely to be any other significant charges which will affect the economics of such a system from our point of view?

Answer:  The generation meter for the solar system will be subject to metering charges. The metering charges are to cover the costs of the Local Distribution Company (LDC) to read the meter and settle the account. Each LDC sets their own metering charges. The Ontario Energy Board is responsible for reviewing and approving the rate schedule of each LDC.

Other costs that a micro-scale generator may be responsible for include (but not limited to):

- connection costs

- income taxes

- on-going maintenance costs

- permits, approvals, inspections
